KineDB Secures Pre-Seed to Rebuild Database Infrastructure as AI Changes the Software Development Landscape

  • KineDB has raised an €850K pre-seed round, led by Superhero Capital, to build a database that handles complex data infrastructure for software engineering teams.
  • AI is accelerating the volume of software being produced, while applications increasingly operate across both cloud infrastructure and local devices. KineDB wants to handle the resulting data-management burden for engineering teams, starting with offline data.

29.10.26, Copenhagen. KineDB today announces €850K in pre-seed funding in a round led by Superhero Capital. The team is building a general-purpose database designed to run wherever software runs, be it cloud infrastructure or directly on local, offline devices.

KineDB initially targets sectors that rely on databases but often operate without a reliable online connection. For example, a mine worker may need to report progress or machine health via a tablet or smartphone while deep underground. With KineDB, they could update a locally stored database without an internet connection, then sync it with the wider database once the miner reestablishes a connection.

Building software has never been so simple; AI has dramatically lowered the barrier to entry for coders. Google’s DORA research shows 90 per cent of technology professionals are now using AI, while recent reports show a 55 per cent YoY boom in iOS app releases, a notable increase over previous trends. With this growth, underlying database infrastructure must now cope with a very different development environment.

KineDB, led by co-founders Axel Löwenhoff and Allan Zimmermann, is being developed to meet this need.

As Löwenhoff explains, “The way AI has opened the gates for developers of all levels to experiment and launch new software is a wonderful thing. A consequence, however, is a lot of software where creators haven’t necessarily considered the underlying databases essential to functionality. With KineDB, we want to remove that as a layer of complication for engineers, by providing a database that works within this new environment.”

Prior to founding KineDB, Zimmermann spent twenty years building cloud and hosting infrastructure. Most recently, he worked on a scalable serverless platform and repeatedly encountered problems with existing database architecture, which led him to identify the need for KineDB. Löwenhoff has spent over a decade selling different types of software to companies around the world, including for UiPath, Grafana Labs, and Lacework.

Importantly, KineDB uses a single database engine that operates both locally/offline within an application and across backend infrastructure. This differentiates it from many existing approaches, which typically stitch together separate systems to manage data both offline and in the cloud.

Gytenis Galkis, Partner at Superhero Capital, says: “AI means more software is being built than ever, often by people who’ve never had to think about databases. Allan has spent two decades building cloud infrastructure, and Axel has sold software to enterprises worldwide. Together, they’ve already shown that one engine can handle data both offline and in the cloud. Starting with apps that have to work without a connection is a sharp entry point into a much bigger market.”

While the team initially focuses on solving the offline data pain point, KineDB will eventually become a general-purpose database. With the funding, the team is hiring, targeting engineers with experience in databases, storage, and query engines.

Alongside Superhero Capital, NGL Ventures participated in the €850K round, along with a series of angel investors, including Cactos CTO Jussi Pyörre, and Kristoffer Abell and Jakob Lilholm, co-CEOs at Danish compliance company Formalize.

KineDB is on a mission to ensure the underlying data infrastructure isn’t left behind. By starting with its offline solution and then moving toward a general-purpose database, the team is making reliable data infrastructure an integral part of the software development cycle, rather than an additional layer of complexity that engineering teams must build and manage themselves.

About Superhero Capital

Superhero Capital is a Helsinki-based venture capital firm that invests in early-stage, software-driven startups in Finland and the Baltic region (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania). Founded in 2015, the firm positions itself as a supportive partner to founders, using the analogy that if founders are “Superheroes,” they are “Alfred”—the behind-the-scenes support that helps them succeed. Superhero Capital is investing through its 2024 fund.
